SDS Optic S.A. achieves full independence in the production of fiber optic biosensors
December 14, 2023
SDS Optic has completed a milestone, launched pilot production of fiber optic sensors, and achieved full production independence in manufacturing complete fiber optic biosensors (inPROBE microsensors). The compliance of process, technological, and manufacturing documentation with the test batch produced by SDS Optic was confirmed by the Orange Polska S.A. center.
Full production independence of SDS Optic S.A.
SDS Optic S.A., a company listed on NewConnect, has been consistently informing the market about the completed stages of developing a pilot production line for the optical components of the inPROBE biosensor. Now, the final stage of this milestone has been completed, and the company has achieved full production independence while meeting the expected technological parameters. The compliance of the submitted process, technological, and manufacturing documentation with the batch of 300 fiber-optic microsensors produced by SDS Optic has been confirmed by an independent center, Orange Polska S.A., which specializes in optoelectronics (fiber-optic technologies). The technological and quality parameters of the produced fiber-optic sensors align with the expected repeatability of the production process. This means that SDS Optic is capable of repeatedly executing the production cycle while maintaining the same level of product quality. It is particularly noteworthy that the quality and parameter consistency of SDS Optic’s fiber-optic sensors significantly surpass the production capabilities of other external entities.
Marcin Staniszewski, CEO of SDS Optic – "The quality parameters of the optical biosensor components we produce, as well as the confirmed repeatability of production, represent exceptional value for the Company. This applies both to the future applications of the inPROBE technology platform and to potential patent filings. It marks the beginning of the Company's transition from a research and development entity to one entering the process of commercializing its technological solutions.
The road to implementing a pilot production line
The achievement of this milestone was made possible through months of work and the dedication of the entire optoelectronics team at SDS Optic. The first phase was the investment stage, which included ordering, purchasing, delivering, and installing customized production equipment and machinery for the planned pilot production, valued at 2.6 million PLN. Next, the company carried out renovation and technological work on cleanroom facilities. Currently, five interconnected rooms with special airlocks meet ISO8 and ISO7 cleanliness standards. In the next stage, the company launched the delivered and installed customized production equipment and machinery, hired and built a new R&D team specializing in optoelectronics (photonics), and conducted calibration of the complete system to achieve consistent parameters for fiber optic sensors while simultaneously developing process documentation.
The completed milestone confirms that the production process can be scaled indefinitely. According to Mateusz Sagan, Chief Operating and Business Development Officer, this will be one of the key factors determining the value of the technology during its commercialization process: "The analysis and verification of our microsensors' parameters, as well as the entire process and production documentation, conducted by the renowned Orange laboratory, represent a breakthrough for us on the path to commercialization. It has been confirmed that our microsensor production can be scaled to semi-industrial levels in a stable and repeatable manner. With such a groundbreaking technology, anyone looking to commercialize or further develop it with us will always ask whether mass production in the thousands or even millions is possible—and they will expect confirmation of our claim. Orange is a globally recognized brand in fiber optic technology, and their verification will leave no doubts in the market," adds Mateusz Sagan.
The results confirmed by Orange and the process documentation of SDS Optic S.A. will be included in the Quality Management System for future audits conducted by the notified body, which is currently TÜV NORD Polska.
Magdalena Staniszewska, R&D Director at SDS Optic S.A. – SDS Optic has the capability to independently produce biological components necessary for sensor functionalization. Combined with the recently launched pilot production of fiber optic sensors, this represents a significant value in the process of technology commercialization and the protection of the company's intellectual property. We are committed to ensuring that the technology we develop meets the highest expectations in terms of functionality, administration, and business aspects. This is a tremendous benefit for us, as well as for every partner we will collaborate with in the future.
